The legalization argument illustrates a fundamental problem with this country. We look at the law the wrong way. People look at this argument in terms of why the government should let us have pot. The argument should be about why the government should have the right to ban it. Too many people look at freedom in terms of what the government allows us to do, what is permitted by those in charge. Freedom should instead be looked at in terms of that we should be free to do whatever we want, unless it can be demonstrably shown that a given freedom negatively affects the rights of others. We sit here begging for the government's permission to light up, when we should be demanding a justification for why we can't.Also, it really bothers me that a constitutional amendment was deemed necessary to grant the government the power to prohibit alcohol, but apparently the same is not true for pot (or any other illegal drug, for that matter).
