| This is an article near and dear to my heart. I want to point out things no one ever mentions. One the topography of the land. The region is very hilly and mountainous, some of it rocky and impossible to build upon. Even where you can build, high-density housing is impossible. Even if you could get underground enough to support tall structures, the amount of earthquake-proofing to make them sound is cost prohibitive. In Vancouver, BC we had some developers, Rennie and Bosa who were building highrises and (at the time) paying the biggest price per square foot for land in a downtown area in North America. The condos they sold were about 30% of the price of similar projects they had in Orange and San Diego counties. Gov'ts are not offering tax breaks for high-density either. Without high-density housing you cannot have sustainable (let alone profitable) pubic transit. The other thing is that in and around LA there is traffic 24-hours a day. LA needs to switch to being a 24-hour society. You can even out traffic congestion if people can access work and school at all hours of the day. Also, if you switch to 4 or 3 day workweeks you can lessen the impact of traffic. The roads will last longer, fuel savings will be greater, pollution will not be so concentrated, etc.California is bankrupt, overpopulated and running out of money. Californians need to get realistic about some radical approaches to doing things. As it stands, I would never move back there. It's just going to get worse. |

Chuck Norris's number 1 export is pain. His #2 export is bigotry.Outer space exists because it is afraid to be on the same planet as Chuck Norris. He wishes this was also true with Mexico.

It's easy to forget that astronomers and theorists are oftentimes forced to interpret still images. A series of still images leaves a lot to the imagination, which theorists are more than happy to fill in with their models. If these guys are saying that they can now observe planetary formation in video, then the public needs to pay close attention to how well their observations are matching the theory. This is incredibly important, as it speaks directly to whether or not gravity is indeed the universe's dominant force. Their first instinct, if the models are dramatically wrong, will be to blame invisible entities. People who are paying attention need to not be so gullible, and also wonder if the observations are telling us that the gravitational accretion models are just wrong. At the point where we no longer question these models, then the models become more of a belief system than science. |
