Charter in 1945, the General Assembly and Secretary-General Trygve Lie created a special committee of 11 ambassadors to decide the future of Palestine with respect to the hundreds of thousands of Jewish people displaced during the Holocaust. The committee recommended that after a transition period of two years, Palestine would be "constituted into an independent Arab state, an independent Jewish state and the (International) City of Jerusalem," remaining "within an economic union." In 1948 the Jewish state was created after much opposition in the Arab states and disagreement within the U.S. government, a conflict that continues to plague that region of the Middle East to this day. 9) Confronting the Aggressors 1948 At the brink of the Cold War, Soviet delegate Andrei Vyshinsky, known for his tirades against the U.S., addressed the General Assembly meeting in Paris. Speaking directly to U.S. delegates Eleanor Roosevelt, John Foster Dulles, Warren Austin and George Marshall, Vyshinsky accused the U.S. of preparing for an atomic war against the Soviet Union because it had previously refused to adhere to a timeline of stopping plants' production of atomic material. Vyshinsky had also tussled with Britain over its occupation of Indonesia. When Edward Stettinius, the first American ambassador to the U.N., introduced a resolution in 1947 to negotiate the removal of British troops from Indonesia, Vyshinsky vetoed the resolution, calling it too weak â€” the first veto cast in the Security Council. Fifty more Soviet vetoes followed over the next seven years. 8) Khrushchev Loses His Cool 1960On his last full day in New York City for the 1960 Assembly meeting, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev took offense to the words of a delegate from the Philippines who claimed that Eastern Europe had been "deprived of political and civil rights" and had effectively been "swallowed up by the Soviet Union." What happened next has been debated, but William Taubman, author of Khrushchev: The Man and His Era writes that after banging a table with both his fists, the Soviet leader took off his right shoe â€” a loafer or sandal, according to Khrushchev's son, because he hated tying laces â€” waved it and then "banged it on the table, louder and louder, until everyone in the hall was watching and buzzing." Afterward Khrushchev was said to have remarked, "It was such fun! The U.N. is sort of a parliament, you know, where the minority has to make itself known, one way or another. We're in the minority for the time being, but not for long." The incident is so often associated with the United Nations and the General Assembly, Taubman says, that the most frequent question asked of U.N. tour guides is, "Where was Khrushchev sitting when he pounded his shoe?"7) Idi Amin's Idols 1973Ugandan President Idi Amin Dada, then the chairman of the Organization of African Unity, held court and gave a spirited yet cringe-worthy performance. The leader, reviled for the imprisonment and execution of his enemies, praised British Prime Minister Edward Heath by comparing him to Adolf Hitler. A German correspondent, eager to hear more of Amin's admiration of Hitler, urged him to continue. Thinking on his feet, Amin â€” who had once sent a letter praising Hitler's extermination of the Jews â€” quickly retracted the statement, saying, "Not Hitler â€” I meant Winston Churchill. Mr. Heath is like Winston Churchill. Please make that Churchill. I don't want to quarrel with my friends. I don't want to open a second-line front against me."6) Disinviting Waldheim 1994During that year's Assembly meetings, Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali refused to send an invitation for the U.N.'s 50th anniversary celebration to former Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim â€” who, it emerged in the mid-'80s, had been charged with murder by the War Crimes Commission for his role as an intelligence officer for the Nazis during World War II. To save face, Boutros-Ghali also disinvited Javier PÃ©rez de CuÃ©llar, the only other former Secretary-General still alive. PÃ©rez de CuÃ©llar graciously did not attend and said he understood.5) Making the Case for WMD 2003Making his case for the invasion of Iraq in 2003, Colin Powell presented Washington's evidence to the U.N. Security Council, including a vial of anthrax and photographs of purported WMD in the country. Sales of Chomsky's book exploded following the speech, perhaps making ChÃ¡vez the Oprah of the General Assembly.2) Ahmadinejad Sounds OffIn 2007, amid news that IAEA reports â€” which had previously stated that Iran had halted its nuclear program in 2003 â€” were most likely incorrect, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran took the podium to declare the political issue of Iranian nuclear proliferation closed to further discussion. Ahmadinejad called out widespread violation of human rights, terrorism and occupation as some of the major problems facing the international world, railing against "those who pretend to be [victims'] exclusive advocates" as the worst offenders. According to Ahmadinejad, these unnamed nations â€” fairly obviously the U.S. and its allies â€” were guilty of "setting up secret prisons, abducting persons [and conducting] trials and secret punishments without any regard to due process."1) Ahmadinejad the Long-Winded 2008Ahmadinejad regaled the Assembly with his typical dismissal of the U.N. and the Security Council's abilities to fight the onslaught of global terrorism and threatened security. Given the same day as President Bush's final address to the General Assembly, Ahmadinejad's eight-page speech noted that Americans and Europeans were "being played with by a small but deceitful number of people called Zionists." He also claimed that "the American empire" was on the brink of collapse because of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan to win "votes in elections." Keeping to his previously held stance, the Iranian President vowed that his country's nuclear program remained peaceful.?

For the effing time last time, the photo of Kim Jong-il isn't doctored. There are pictures of the same stand showing the break in the line at the bottom. Look at the bottom of the stands in the bottom right corner of this picture http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2qlbz0m&s=3 Notice how there is no line between the soldiers at the same height where there is no line in the other photo where Jong-il is standing in front of the stands? @Agamemnon582bc I posted this because it is a real picture and it pisses me off that I keep seeing the same ***** picture with people saying it is photoshopped.
